Camellias
Recovering from a life-threatening illness, Betsy began looking deeply at the camellia flowers growing in her backyard as a meditation and totem for her healing. These recent, small, mandala-like paintings are each 5.5" x 5.5."
An open camellia flower, or two, in a Chinese rice bowl is a spiritual, aesthetic experience. Their presence offers me centered, joyful energy and a moment of intense beauty.
How fortunate I am to live surrounded by the half-century old camellia bushes which my grandmother and her friends planted! Granny called the emerging buds "her babies." As I paint their blossoms and leaves, I sense her blessing.
